How to Plug a DJ Controller in Newer Mac Books
Many beginners DJ’s find it a little complex to attach their controllers to their laptops (especially newer ones). The USB cable with controllers usually doesn’t fit in the port of your Mac Book. For beginners, this may seem like a big problem. So, if you don’t want to damage your laptop or the new controller and want your controller attached to your Mac, please read on…
For starters, this can be annoying as it can keep you away from practicing. You just can’t go out there and buy a new cable, as it is not easy to get the right one. Now, what exactly is the problem? The newer Mac Book models have USB-C type sockets while the most cables are still made for USB-A type sockets. The cable in your DJ mixer boss is also likely to an A type one.
Don’t worry; what you need is a converter. You have three options to choose from.
USB-C – USB-A lead
USB-C to A converter lead from Apple can do the trick here. All you have to do is plug the lead into the original USB-A to B cable and start doing your thing. This solution, however, is not a foolproof one. It doesn’t create a strong connection between your controller and your laptop. It can be okay for practicing purpose but when you’re performing in front of a huge crowd, you need something more solid.
A USB-C to USB-A Adapter
A USB-C to A adapter is designed to do the same work as the sable above – just minus the cable part. It is a small item that can be plugged into the USB port of your laptop, allowing the original USB cable (that comes with the mixer) to be inserted into it. This adapter is smaller in size, comparatively cheaper and more durable than leads. Having said that, you still need to be careful with these adapters as they can be knocked out easily. All in all a good solution for home studios and beginners but still not an ideal choice for a professional performance.
A USB-B to USB-C Lead
A USB-B to C Lead can add more reliability to your DJ work. It is your best bet as it makes the USB-C to A lead of your computer redundant. It is more reliable and one of the best options for professional DJs. Probably the only downside is that you can’t DJ on another computer unless you’re carrying the old lead.
No matter which connector or lead you choose, one thing is for sure that you won’t be harming your computer or the DJ controller. You can look for the above leads and adapters online or just visit your local music store. Make sure you find the best one for your needs and budget.
